Maiori, Minori, Sorrento and Massa Lubrense where the spread of the first lemon trees were. A greater diffusion of this fruit came across the coastline, since its properties favored the healing of scurvy, a disease caused by vitamin C deficiency. For the Amalfi people, historically famous seafaring people, it was crucial to have on their ships stocks of lemons. Already in the eleventh century, the Republic of Amalfi decreed that on board ships there were always provided with these fruits. From 1400 to 1800, for their use in the fight scurvy, there was a great demand of Amalfi lemons, given their wealth of vitamin C. Lemons were required not only from other areas bells and Italian, but also from foreign countries, especially northern Europeans. In this regard, in the nineteenth century Matteo Camera wrote lemon "... that from Minori were transported by sea to other Italian markets, together with limoncello and cetrangoli ...", a term which the oranges were given to love. So it was that along the coast of lemon groves grew over the centuries the number and amplitude, thanks to the recovery for the agriculture of steep and rugged land.
