Black lentil of Enna’s hills: the recovery of a jewel that has risked extinction.
This lentil is a typical ancient cultivar of the Enna’s province, it grown in the Enna, Leonforte, Calascibetta, and Nicosia area. It was Much appreciated until the '50s. After the second world war, its production has gradually diminished, thanks to the common agricultural policy, but especially for the advent of new more resistant varieties, more productive, and the mechanization of the production.
In all this time, the black lentil risked seriously to disappear forever, and was produced in varying quantities from 100 to 400 kg/year. In 2002, being willing to start the production of this legume and having needs its seed, we were able to find only 800 grams! Therefore, it has become a real "gem" by gourmets.
